Recently completed photographing a new project located in Tampa, Florida. Constructed on a former cow pasture and one of the last large remaining open spaces in this section of Tampa, the facility is a branch of St. Joseph's Hospital BayCare Health System.

I have documented many health care facilities, ER and trauma centers, but never a dedicated behavioral center specifically designed for Baker Act patients and those in need of assistance with their mental health capacities. Quite an enlightening experience, as most projects should be. Each one has a unique quality... a personality.
Photography was completed the weekend of January 14th and 15th, and I was accompanied on site by my client, ARRAY Healthcare Solutions with U.S. headquarters just outside Philadelphia.

There Still Is A Santa... Fun To Be Three!

Yes Virginia, there is a Santa Claus! Oh to be three again and come down the stairs to see a new electric train set going around the circle track Ol' junior here was so excited about the train, he didn't even notice Santa's milk and cookies were gone! We had a wonderful Christmas week with family first in Maine, then Chicago where these two classic Christmas morning photos were captured.

Air travel has become such a nightmare we decided to drive the 1,194 miles from Damariscotta, Maine to Chicago. Interstate 90 all the way into the city. No snow. No sleet. No sun. What a drive. I've never been through our country's "rust belt". Stopping for a bite to eat on the second morning out, we purposely wanted to patronize a good old fashioned american diner, away from the interstate system. Just happened that we found one in a great little town in Ohio by the name of Jefferson. This place was right out of a Spielberg movie...

Wild Oyster Harvesting... Damariscotta, Maine

Off to the river, mean low tide.

I have never had the opportunity to participate and document the wild harvesting of fresh Maine oysters during low tide from the Damariscotta River bed. Especially in the middle of an early morning snow! No snow and the images would have been rather bland...

On the right you'll see as we begin the long our trek down to the mighty Damariscotta River; famous for many things in our country's history.

Breathtaking view as we come down the rocky slope from the path. There was a certian surreal feeling to the time spent on the "floor" of the river, knowing that in a few short hours, such massive amounts of water would be returning to reclaim this space.

Bingo...! Ted scores a real beaut'.

Christmas Lights Bring Smiles!

Christmas lights abound... the power companies love this time of year! Cold weather and more kilowatts for the decoration lighting displays. These three images were produced last week for our local property owners association.

Our assignment was to document the entrance applications and seek some of the better decorated homes in the Abacoa community Enjoy the holidays and have a Merry Christmas!

Winter is just around the corner, "officially" December 21st. So, I thought it would might be a nice idea to dust off some of my old alpine ski racing images from an earlier life as a sports photographer. That short lived, heavy on unique experiences career exposed me to a life very few are fortunate enough to see first hand. As a staff photographer for Ski Racing Magazine, I was on the road for pretty much all of winter. From Park City, Utah, to the French Alps, I was credentialed through F.I.S., or known as the International Ski Federation which provided all access to the mountain top ski race courses. The races encompassed all disciplines; slalom, downhill, GS, super G, freestyle... The poor chap in the above image from Park City was captured as I was running for my life along with 15 other photographers. We were bailing out of our designated shooting pen as the skier from, are you ready for this... the Virgin Islands Ski Team missed his gate. Lots of snow I understand in St. Thomas, eh. Sports photography is loaded with many components in order to come away with a great shot. You need luck, anticipation, good light, knowledge of the sport and of course a compelling subject. Well, the stars aligned for me on this one. The skier was coming right for us like a bowling ball barrelling down the center of the lane for a strike at the pins.

Meribel, France, women's pre-olympic super G race. I'm in mental lock down to capture every last U.S. racer entered in the first run. Forerunners, buzz by... first few racers fly by. No U.S.A.! What gives here? I'm the mushroom stuck at the top of a French Alp ski race course... last to know anything in earthly news outside of the "white circus" bubble. On this day, Bush One decided to have a little fun in the desert with some wacky leader over in Iraq. So, as a safety measure, all the U.S. Ski Team was pulled out in the middle of the night and sent back home. Your intrepid photographer stayed (didn't know otherwise!) and just keep shooting. What ever else was there to do. Got some great French powder skiing in with that free all access credential! I highly recommend visiting Meribel for a ski holiday, or try in the summer months. Natural beauty beyond description. Of the scores of European ski resorts that I feel blessed in being payed to "visit", I'd put Meribel right up there as one of the most beautiful. Of course, how about those Swiss Alps... hmm.

JUPITER, Fla. – Old programs, pins and photographs – the remnants of good times long gone by but recalled at a moment’s notice by these mementos of the past. In a fitting tribute to Miami’s Orange Bowl Stadium, one of the country’s oldest and most famous football venues, photojournalist Scott B. Smith has amassed an astounding collection of photographs that record the vitality and history of this storied stadium in his new book, The Orange Bowl: A Photographic Journey & Architectural Survey (published by AuthorHouse).

“The Orange Bowl. To a kid growing up in Miami, getting a ticket to a game there was awesome. Sneak in? Never. (It was quite easy…)” Smith writes. “I recall like it was last week, walking up those oh-so-steep ramps and still see the light blue air against the night sky. The field of dark green grass. The enormity of the place. Blue air, you ask? Remember – everyone smoked in the ’50s. It was a night game. Hey, I was nine.”

The Orange Bowl Stadium was put to rest in the spring of 2008, but not before Smith captured the Miami landmark from every possible angle, taking time to find every architectural detail from the seats, the ground and even in aerial shots. In The Orange Bowl: A Photographic Journey & Architectural Survey, Smith records his own experience at The Orange Bowl, over the course of his early life and through his career.

As a child, Smith enjoyed football games with his parents and godparents, tailgating and being a “water boy” and ball boy for the University of Miami Hurricanes. In later years he returned as a sports photographer to shoot for CaneSport and Husker’s Illustrated, but in 2008 he revisited The Orange Bowl for the last time, before its demolition, as an architectural photographer who could appreciate the classic, functional design of a stadium of a bygone era. “The book is not about football so much, but a visual memory for the scores of fans who may not have realized the last game attended would be their final time in the stadium,” Smith writes.

Winter Scene - Damariscotta, Maine

First winter snow has fallen in parts of a beautiful region in our country known as New England. I captured this Maine home just after an overnight snow in Damariscotta, along State Road 129. I've visited in summer, fall and winter... never gets old and the drive south on this road to New Harbor and Bristol is a must see and a must do if you ever have the opportunity.

Fresh snow tire tracks from our early FEDEX delivery... makes for an interesting shot.

The owners of Farriss Farm, http://www.farrissfarm.com/ take care of and raise a great assortment of animals, in addition to growing a diverse selection of herb and vegetable plants free of pesticides, herbicides, hormone and antibiotics. My neighbor, Aran Goyoaga, http://www.arangoyoaga.com/ told me about this little farm and that she gets all her eggs fresh from the hen house, and swears by the garden vegetables and herbs for her cooking. Time for a picnic...! Ah, winter. Many folks really can't find many good things about winter; high fuel bills, slush, frigid days... but one of the most beautiful moments in the winter season is immediately after a fresh snow fall. Location for this calming scene is along the Damariscotta River, in the south part of the Town of Damariscotta, Maine; http://www.damariscottaregion.com/ I could not resist grabbing the camera while on Christmas holiday with family. Center the ol' apple tree, hold still for the slow shutter and rip off a few frames... then back to the fire place and football!

Where Guestbook - MIAMI

The 2012 edition of "Where Guestbook" Miami recently wrapped production and is being printed. My cover shot's color and abstract angle caught the attention of Morris Visitor Publications Photo Director, Susan Strayer; http://mvp.morris.com/ This interior architectural shot was resting in my archive and she discovered it through stock photography agency PhotoLibrary. PhotoLibrary was recently acquired by Getty Images; http://gettyimages.com/ If you have traveled through South Beach and arrived at the intersection of Washington Avenue and 5th Street, this very interestingly designed mixed-use office building sits on the southwest corner. The distinguishing feature of the design is the corner glass block tower rising eight stories and is fully illuminated by a multi-colored computer controlled lighting system. Colors can be programmed to change colors continuously. This cover image was captured by lying on my back, facing straight up with a Nikon F-100, 20mm lens loaded with Fuji Velvia transparency film. I burned through almost 36 frames to freeze the computerized sequence at about one second exposure at f-8.

Up In The Sky - New Miami Marlins Stadium Construction

March 8, 2010 I chartered a Robinson R-22 helicopter from Bravo Helicopters, ww.bravohelicopters.com/Default.aspx to document the facilites of Shell Lumber, www.shelllumber.com/ Shell needed updated aerial photography for marketing and insurance purposes. On the way back from the shoot I wanted to check out the progress on the new baseball stadium being constructed on the site of the Orange Bowl Stadium. Much has been accomplished since then, as the Marlins will be playing in their new digs April, 2012.

The Orange Bowl Stadium, My Book

On Monday, January 11, 2010, I had the opportunity to discuss my book with Bob Mayer on the set of WTVJ's South Florida Today. Wish we had more time, as there is much to talk about when the subject is the Orange Bowl Stadium.

The live interview segment lasted a mere three and half minutes. Had to be in the on set chair about an hour before we actually started the interview. A great experience.... when's the next one!

1941, The Orange Bowl Classic

Don't quote me on this, but I think he once told me there were about 55 to 60 thousand people living in the city about this time. Hard to believe now, isn't it? So, if that were the case, it's not hard to image the Orange Bowl Classic football game was THE place to be.

The Back Cover

While shooting over 1,500 images for the book, I was constantly puzzeled as to what to do with the back cover. The image I settled on is from the southeast side of the stadium, around gate 8.

Somewhere in my life, I had come across a black and white shot of this side of the building. I suspect it might have been for a UM game program back in the late 1950's. I shot digital, and added the sepia "aged" look in PhotoShop CS4.

The windows were art deco glass block when I was a kid, and the ticket windows were right out of an old movie... iron bars and they would close it up from the inside with a section of painted wood. Notice, the late 1930's early 1040's curve effect on the ticket areas.
